Everything Completed!

We encountered a few problems whilst editing the video as there was high demand on the equipment needed. However, it did get completed in time but one thing that we were aiming to do was not possible. We wanted to put the music in the background of the interviews. This did not happen for two reasons. We could not film the interview with the music playing in the background because the music was live. The second reason was because we could not get an MP3 from the band to play in the background to add in during editing. We could have taken the live music from another existing clip, but the quality was not impressive. Additionally, there was background noise from the pub that the interview was filmed in and this would have interferred with the film. The background noise helped to create the buzz about the place as it was shot after their gig so this could effectively rub off onto the audience watching.

Unexpected problem

Unfortunately, we have had an issue with re-shooting our footage, so we went back to the band and tryed to film again. However, a member of our group broke his hand and we were delayed further. We have managed to to re-film at a gig on the saturday before the due in date which will mean that we will have to concentrate our full attention into the project. On the monday morning we will have to upload and edit/cut the film to create an attractive and fitting promotion for the band's DVD of their latest tour. Maybe our organisational skills could have been a little better within out group and this is an aspect that we can work upon over the next few days to complete our work.

Finishing touches

It is half term and our project is due in, on the 20th of april, leavin us only 9 days to complete our project.
This is where we a re starting to notice little problems including that we have alot of work spread over different computers, and we will not see each other again until the day of hand in. Therefore we have to take this into consideration, meaning that we have all decided to go into college for a few days over half term to catch up.
We are also making a few finishing touches to the blog, adding photos where appropriate.
We also need to download everything onto a cd so that it can be sent away to the examiners, which is proving difficult as everything is not in one place. This will mean that we will have to transfer all of the work onto one computer space and then burn onto disc.

Poster and Dvd Cover

We are now looking into our poster and dvd cover. We have looked at many screen shots of our filming and we have also emailed the band asking if we can use their music over the top of our promotional video and if we can borrow their photo as our plan of using a live shot did not go to plan. Additionally, as the band are well known locally, a few of their photos are recognisable amongst the public which can help to improve advertisement and attract a bigger audience.

Although our live shots were good, the lighting was not brillliant and when put on the dvd cover it did not look that appropriate, this means that looking from the eye of the audience it is less likely to sell.

For the DVD cover we had to look into the age limits on DVD's, when looking into them we dicided that maybe an age restriction was not appropriate but a warning saying "parental guidance" "explict lyrics" was required.

We also decided that it required a barcode and that the production companys name had to be written on it. We thought about creating a logo but we decided that writing the companys name was enough as it explained to the audience exactly who we are and it advertises the company as a business alongside an example of our work.

We have also created some pre-production work on the poster and DVD cover including drawings of the design of the dvd cover and poster, a dvd deconstruction and a poster deconstruction and a story board, to construct a plan of what we want to do for our production work.

Editing the filming

This week we finally managed to upload all the footage we have shot. We have began to edit the footage that we had collected from the gig we went to last week, and shortened it down to a manageable size. We have also cut in the interviews with various people throughout the video. Even when the interviews are taking place the bands music will still play over the top as a background sound.

We have also got a few considerations that we will need to take in such as:Putting the bands name up on the first frame of the video so that the viewer knows who they are watching. In order to this we can either use the logo for the band that they originally use (which would be the best idea as it will be more recognizable to the audience) or we can alter it to make it appear more original.

For this we had to look at ideas of shot types, angles, and the timeline of how the shots will
appear and the transitions between each shot.
For this we chose according to what we believed to fit our genre. For example for out shot types we researched into close up, wide shots and extreme close ups: we planned to keep it simple as we wanted the
DVD to be about the band. using in the video only wide shot, extreme wide shots and close ups. We also took this into consideration with the poster and DVD cover using average wide shots of the band and equipment to focus mainly on the music.
We also looked at low and high shots to
decider the angle we wanted. coming to the conclusion of a low shot this gives the allusion that the camera is a member of the crowd and it gives the band power. this was also useful to use as we had to film live, meaning that we wouldn't be able to say wait one Minuit whilst we move, meaning that we were able to keep the band in shot at all time with out getting in the way.

Finishing touches to pre-production

This week we have had alot of trouble with the system and uploading the video therefore we have decided that we will do the finishing touches to the pre-production, checking spellings, grammer and adding things we feel need to be said.
We have also started doing sketches of the designs for our poster and dvd cover we have also sketched a rough storyboard for our music promotional video, so that we have more idea's of how we want to arrange it when we have been able to upload all the footage.
We have been through all our work and doule checked it adding more to the pre-production and production work
and will begin working on our indervisual evalations soon.

Proposal

James , Gemma and Becca

Proposal

We have chosen to a package for a release of an album and to include a music promotion video. The reason for our group to choose this was because it looked the most interesting out of the five packages’ that were available to do. Also we found out that we all are into the music industry and have different music backgrounds that will help us throughout the task. We felt that we would be able to get the best out of this package because the other tasks we weren’t as keen on.

Preproduction has helped us before starting the production because it has enabled us to have an outlook at present bands that have there own music promotion videos and how they have made them. We also looked into current music MySpace pages looking into how they created them and what they had included. Also looking into how colours and text can help in presentation.

As well has this we have also looked into gig posters that bands have had made for them to help promote their tours. We looked into how they had laid the poster out and what they had included.

We intend to go to a well known band in Portsmouth and create a music promotion video for the band, using different camera skills and angles to create this. As well as this we will also be interviewing the band co coincide with the live footage we produce. We will also interview a number of fans and get their point of views and opinions ECT. Once this has all been produced we will convert the footage onto a apple Mac and edit the video to a standard that we are all happy with.

Along side this photo shoot will be taken of the band for the magazine advertisement and the cover for the DVD. These photos could include portrait shots and capturing the band playing live at a gig.

The style of the band that we have chosen for the pre production is a mix between indie and rock. We found this a point of interest and found it very accessible to analyze other bands like this. The style of filming that we are going to use we have adopted from other music production videos as we found this most effective as they have really captured the band and the live moment with the fans.

The band that we have chosen for our production is Guilded Youth, The location for out filming for the live footage will be at one of there live gigs in Portsmouth/ the surrounding aria. As well as this we will have to arrange locations for photo shoots. We will take a variety of photos so that we have a wide range to choose from for are magazine and DVD cover.

We are planning to go to a gig and arrange a quick interview with the band before the gig to get some information into them. Then we also plan on getting photos and interviews with various fans. Throughout the gig we will be capturing footage of the band. Then after the gig we plan on getting interviews with certain fans getting there views on the gig and the band.

Review of Rough cut video

After filming 10 days ago we have quickly roughly cut what we don't need, this means we are now able to review it and decide on ideas such as :
  1. if we need more footage
  2. if our footage is appropriate
  3. whether we need an interview with our footage.
  4. what transactions we need
  5. is the lighting okay
  6. is the setting okay
  7. can we see the band
After discussing these ideas as a group we decided that , we needed more footage , although it was appropriate it wasn't long enough,( we booked another date for a gig with the band and went and got more footage). We also decided that the interview was not necessary and we had to concentrate on the other filming but would try and fit it in if we had time. we decided that the transactions could be rough and didn't need to be precise as this fits with the edge rough genre of the band. when discussing if we could see the band correctly we decided that although it was not perfect it was the best we could get as we wanted live raw footage.

After Filming

We did our filming in january. before filming "The Hype " ( out chosen band ) we also filmed a few other bands to get an idea of camera angles, lighting and other technical things that we had take into consideration before we went. this was as a saftey net, therefre if the camera angle, lighting or any other techincal situation was not up to the standered we needed we still had the time and ability to change it before filming our bands performance.

Overall our filming or the band we were focusing on was sucsess full as we got the right shoots, he lighting and audio was correct and the band's performance was all round sucsessful. however before filming we had come across some difficulties. We had to wade ourself through the crowd, changing positions a few times to get the right shots needed. Also half way through, a couple of people at the front stood up and began to dance, meaning our film crew had to move again to get a good shot.

Alltogether our filming was sucsessfull and as well as filming the band in live action we will include interviews with the band off set, as well as interviews with people that have seen the band live.

We will need to also think about doing a photo shoot as well, for the dvd promotion cover and poster. We have looked into ideas of real media's in our pre production, analsing different posters and DVD covers.

Begin Production

Now we have completed most of the Pre-production ( little edits are needed) we have decided to begin our production.
We began back in September believing that we would be producing our project on a band called "Guilded Youth", however due to communication difficulties we were unable to use them.
However within a week we found a willing group that were local and had a gig that we were able to film a within a couple of weeks, "The Hype". After pre-production research into the band, we spoke to them and arranged that we could film them at Staunton school, in the battle of the bands competition.
However when making arrangements for the filming of the band at there gig there was a number of things we needed to take in to consideration before beginning to film, these included :
  • How we are going to shoot the footage
  • What type of camera angles we will need to suit our video
  • Lighting in the setting
  • What camera equipment we will need
  • Stage setting (whether we are close enough to see the band)
  • Audio (whether we can properly hear the band)
After considering all these items we choice are gig very persifically, we looked at all these items choicing what we felt was there best venue.
we decide on a venue and all met at the venue on the date of the gig to film.

Pre-production

It is January 2010 and we have almost completed all our pre-production planning. We began by looking at music videos and promotional adverts for bands such as Kings of Leon, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys as this is the sort of genre that interests us most. We found that these 'indie' bands contributed unique and individual attributes to their videos and music which would make it more interesting to the audience, gaining huge amounts of consumers. Also, our production team decided to produce a cover for it's release on DVD. This gave us the great idea of using the DVD to promote the band's upcoming album by filming one of their concerts to sale to a broader audience that could not afford or attend one of their gigs. This was inspired by the Kings of Leon promotion that we observed and analysed in our pre-production stage as it involved the camera diving into the crowd of a concert and found that it created an amazing atmosphere.

We are now working on our proposal. However, the amount of work that we can do on our proposal today will be limited because we do not have a band to work with as of yet. So we will work on the proposal as much as possible today and when we have reached our limit, continue to work on our pre-production.

Are proposal will be a write up of what we feel we wish to complete. it will include; what we intend to do, including th music video, preparation , poster and DVD cover. it will lay out what we propose to do, and the pre-producion will go into detail on how we plan to do this.

Our plan now is to start the production, including filming, photographing and editing. However the filming cannot take place till a later date as we have to wiat till the band is free.
